During the Cold War of the 1960s, a series of political events changed the course of many lives. Several students who had been sent by the Indonesian government to study in the Soviet Union (Russia) and China were unable to return home following the events of 1965. Stranded abroad, they crossed from one country to another without legal status, searching for a place willing to take them in. They lost contact with their families in Indonesia, who also became victims of the political upheaval. Their stories, alongside many others, speak of an enduring longing to find a way home. They represent thousands who shared the same fate, many of whom have since passed away across the world. They are living monuments to violence—surviving, enduring, and carrying its legacy forward. That legacy is passed down through fears embedded in the minds, hearts, and instincts of one generation after another, like enormous chains wrapped around the hands, feet, and thoughts of those who came after them. If they were searching for a way home, the generations that follow are searching for a path to freedom—freedom from fear.
