Balinese choreographer, dancer, and educator Dayu Ani turns inward to examine the gradual disappearance of Bali’s agricultural landscape—and the cultural knowledge disappearing with it.
Beginning with her own memories of rice fields slowly giving way to homes and development, ‘Aku’ yang Hilang moves beyond the loss of landscape to something more personal: the realisation that what is disappearing is also the connection between the self, ancestral knowledge, and the agrarian culture that once shaped everyday life.
Performed by seven dancer-vocalists, the work brings voice and movement into a single language, moving through kidung, sloka, vocal experimentation, and knowledge drawn from the ancient Aji Pari manuscript. Minimalist choreography continues ideas developed through Dayu Ani’s work on Garin Nugroho’s Samsara, bridging the agrarian cultures of Java and Bali through Bedayan and Sesanghyangan.
